  • Jude 1 12:

Context For The Scripture References

  • God blesses earth and its inhabitants through His believers.
  • We each have special abilities God has given us to help others and pass along His blessings.
  • The best way to practice those special abilities is mostly through joy of doing them, and less about obligation.
  • Joy springs from your deepest interests, passions and talents: interests are wanting to know or learn about something – they are more intellectual in nature; passion is what is in our heart and what we feel – they are more emotional; talents are innate (existing from birth) and what we are good at.
  • When we know our interests, passions and talents, and make use of them, we operate from a position of joy. That is what God’s wants…letting us do that which makes us happy, which we can use to help others, which let’s us pass along God’s blessings to them, and makes God happy because he is seeing his unique creation do what he made us to do. Win-win all the way around.
  • When we really know at a deep level our interest, passions and talents, it is really hard to stop ourselves from using them. Not using them means lack of joy and meaning in life and makes life a long and joyless slog. Life can be long and hard, but we can still have a lot of joy through it all.
  • We are here to give more than we took while in this life. If we do not find out what our special abilities are and use them, then we may not produce anything. Our lives become a waste. We consume resources but fail to give in return. We are like clouds that produce nothing.
  • Knowing our special abilities helps us focus… keeps us in our wheel house and away from things that we might not be naturally inclined to do, which can set us up for failure.
  • Salt is a necessity in life and improves taste. Something that has better taste makes us happier.  That is what we do when we practice our special abilities, we are providing necessities from God through us to bless others and make the world better.  We are also making the world a happier place.
  • Knowing and practicing our special abilities allows our light to shine to the world.
  • Theologian and social justice leader Howard Thurman on passion: “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Source: The Living Wisdom of Howard Thurman: A Visionary for Our Time. What makes you come alive is knowing your interest, passions and talents, and practicing them.
  • See Matthew 6:33:  …and he will give them to you IF [emphasis mine] you give him first place in your life and LIVE AS HE WANTS YOU TO [emphasis mine]. I think If you practice your special abilities, you are doing what he wants and living as he wants, and he will take care of you in context of this scripture.

But…

  • Practicing our special abilities can be thankless because we often may not see the reward for a long time, or ever in this life. We cannot ever know the full effects of our special abilities on others, or even on future generations. But God knows, and that is all that matters.
  • Focus less on the gratitude from others or the worldly accolades from using our special abilities, and focus more on the joy and gratitude we experience internally from practicing them; this shift in thinking is not easy and can take a long time to settle in.

Why This Is Important For Us and Our Business

  • Starting and growing a business can be all-consuming and it is important that we enjoy it. Otherwise, we are more likely to burn out. When our business extends from our deepest interest, passions and talents: we are more likely to enjoy it;
  • We can leverage our special abilities into a business that touches shareholders, owners, customers, suppliers, contractors…many different stakeholders that gives us the opportunity to help them with our special abilities and pass along God’s blessings;
  • We are able to exceed expectations when doing our work in context of your special abilities, which allows us to build loyalty with our stakeholders;
  • Knowing and practicing our special abilities will help attract certain people to us, and vice versa, attract us to them, because they need what we have.  See 1 Peter 5:2…feed the flock of God.  The definition of flock is birds of one kind.  Our flock are people of one kind that attract to us and vice versa, we are attracted to them.  Knowing you and your interest, passions, and talents lets you discover your flock.

Applying It To Us and Our Business

  • Build a product and our company around our interests, passions and talents.
  • If we can, focus on practicing our special abilities (or focus on using our strengths); let others do what we are weak at. This is not always feasible, especially if we are just starting out or we are not able to have others do the things we are weak at doing.
  • Obey God and leave all the consequences to Him (Charles Stanley).  To obey is to use our special abilities.  Use them and leave all the consequences to God.
